Summary and steps:
After reading the research on Robert Gagne's Nine Step of Instruction, We realized that it is a combination of cognitive theory and how the steps of the learners learn as they steps are in order.
The cognitive theory part is based on memory: How to gain learners attention is on Sensory Memory - Haptic, Iconic or Echoic then transferred to short term memory involved chunking then long term by retention through rehearsal. The steps cannot be skip or else the learner would find problems learning the content/materials.
The Nine Steps of Instruction is based on:
1st: Gaining Attention
- Why must the material gain the learners attention?
- To entice the learners to be interested or motivated in learning the materials/content.
2nd: Inform Learners of Objective
- Why must the material inform the learners about the learning objective?
- To allow the learners to know what will they be learning during the session and the expectation after they have gone through the materials.
- This allows the learner to organize their thoughts and provide a review
3rd: Stimulate recall of prior learning
- Learners are able to enhance their prior knowledge or skills, so that it will be easier to continue in helping them in learning and remembering.
- Displaying the content that learners are learning
- Chunking: 7+/-2 items on the slides will allow users to remember easily.
5th: Provide Guidance for Learning
- The steps for learners to learn, so that the learners won't learn the wrong things
- Focus on the topic or content
- Contents must be straight forward
6th: Elicit Performance
- To allow the learner to put their skills or knowledge on trial.
- Feedback session to correct learners on what is correct/wrong and the reasons behind it.
8th: Assess Performance
- Determined whether they have understand and learn the topic that is covered.
9th: Enhance retention and transfer.
- Allow learners to understand how to apply in similar situation and thus allowing the learner remember about what have they learn in the lesson.
List our the available tools to produce an elearning materials for different platforms (include your research URL).
Microsoft learning content development system (LCDS) is a free tool to create online courses. The program can create quizzes, interactive games, media, animation, assessments and many more.
CourseLab is another free tool to create web-based training and e-learning materials.
It allows:
editing - Drag and drop placing,
The layout and usability is like using Powerpoint-like environment,
rich media support like using flash movies,
Rapid Development - Importing Powerpoint presentation into the learning materials
and many more.
Adobe e-learning suite, create interactive e-learning without the use of programming. it can create a voiceover for the powerpoint slides using adobe presenter and many more.
